Religion Grades 6/7

The 6/7th grade curriculum is a study of the New Testament. It focuses on the life of Jesus, the Sacraments, service as modeled by Jesus and his disciples.

Religion Grade 8

  • 1rst trimester: Morality - Life in Christ
  • 2nd trimester: Church and Sacraments
  • 3rd trimester: Church History

Language Arts

Language Arts Grades 6/7

The study of language arts facilitates students' development in becoming engaged, confident readers who explore and appreciate a range of literary expressions. Students will have the opportunity to personalize their own reading selections, with the objective of encouraging a lifelong love of reading. Focus will include: grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and the writing process.

Language Arts Grade 8

Students will have the opportunity to personalize their own reading selections, with the objective of encouraging a lifelong love of reading. Focus will include: grammar, vocabulary, reading responses, writing, five paragraph essay, and Latin and Greek roots and derivatives.

Science

The primary goal of the science program at St. Therese is to encourage inquiry and reasoning ability in all aspects of a student's life. Students explore a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines during their three years of middle school, including geology, physics, biotechnology, cell biology, and ecology.

Science Grades 6

Sixth grade students will adopt a yearlong environmental service project. By restoring natural forest ecology in the Madrona Woods, the students will gain an understanding of native species and the human impact on our local environment. The sudents also participate in a weeklong CYO enviromental camp at Camp Hamilton.

Science Grades 7

Seventh graders begin the year with a trimester of physics, which introduce some properties of matter and Newton's Laws of Motion. Astronomy and rocketry follow, with a visit to the Challenger Space Program at the Museum of Flight.

Science Grade 8

The eighth graders begin their studies by reviewing cells before moving on to animal biology, a unit that includes frog dissection. Genetics, heredity, and DNA are studies during the second trimester. The last trimester is spent studying more advanced physics concepts such as trajectory, potential and kinetic energy, and center of gravity.

Social Studies

Social Studies Grades 6/7

Students begin a conceptual approach to U.S. History.

Social Studies Grade 8

World History: beginning with the history of Rome, the Middle Ages, and finally Modern Times.

Math

The middle school math program is consistent with the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) and the Archdiocese of Seattle curriculum guidelines for mathematics.

Math Grades 6/7

Students will learn pre-algebra skills with units of study including: the language of algebra; integers; one and two step equations; factors and fractions; rational numbers; inequalities; and proportions and percents. Students who have mastered the basic pre-algebra skills may be given the opportunity to work ahead on additional advanced topics. By the end of the year, the majority of the 7th graders should be ready to move on to algebra. WASL preparation and practice will be included in the course of study.

Math Grade 8

Students will explore algebra with units of study including: application of rational numbers; evaluation, solving, and simplifying multi-step equations; solving inequalities; polynomials; factoring; and graphing linear and quadratic functions. The month of November will include a review to help prepare students for high school entrance/placement exams.
