1st trimester

Found Objects taught by Bernetta Branch. Students will decorate birdhouses, mosaic trays, decoupage, learn to make Afro buds and many more exciting projects. Limit 10 students.

2nd trimester

Quilting class, taught by a member of the Pacific Northwest African American Quilters Guild. Limit 10 students.

3rd trimester

Fail Safe Club

Provides the opportunity for students with missing work to complete and turn in those assignments. Students will not participate in their chosen elective whenever any assignment has not been turned in. Moderator: Ms. Jungers. Available all three trimesters.

Hearts that Care

A service course that is cross graded and open to 6,7,8th graders who want to volunteer their talent in our school community. Through volunteer participation students will shape the community they live in. Their contributions will make a difference and change the quality of life. The emphasis is on learning by doing, along with associated instruction, writing, journaling, reflection, and discussion. Orientation for the field placement will be integrated into the class. The volunteer placement requires tutoring children and being a mentor and positive role model to children.

Physical Education

The goals for middle school P.E. are as follows:
  • Develop a program oriented to the success of every student.
  • Promote the acceptance of personal responsibility for one's health, physical well-being, and lifelong appreciation of physical activity.
  • Provide all students with an opportunity to develop skills needed to participate with others in physical activity and other aspects of social interaction.

1st trimester - Co-ed

A P.E. class offering a round table of activities from the following categories:
  • sports
  • traditional P.E.
  • non-traditional P.E.
  • field trips
  • health classes
Instructor: Ms. Elliott

2nd trimester - Girls only

Dance/alternative excercise which will also include a women's oriented health class utilizing guest speakers from both allopathic and alternative medicines. As a special treat the girls enjoy 'pamper parties' focusing on hair, nails, face, and feet. Instructor: Ms. Elliott, limit 12 students.

3rd trimester - Co-ed

Volleyball: students will learn the basics of the sport via video, practice and coaching from an experienced volleyball coach. Instructor: Ms. Elliott/Michelle Schaab, limit 18 students.

6/7 Middle School: Body Image and the Media

Girls only, Katinka Kraft will lead girls in the exploration of body image and the media. This course will culminate in the end of the year Show Case of performances and visual art displays. Katinka will co-facilitate the class with visiting visual, sound, and movement TA's in developing an interdisciplinary project that addresses challenges of young women in regard to their body perception. Instructor: Katinka Kraft (Arts Corps)

Limit of 9 girls.

3rd trimester

Limit of 10 girls from the 1rst or 2nd trimester to work with the multimedia class on a video presentation.

Multimedia

All three trimesters. Students in Multimedia will produce a monthly news show, complete with commercials and cartoon animations by using the multimedia applications: Flash, Quicktime, and Adobe. Students in this class will understand basic fundamentals of reporting television news as they fill the roles of producer, director, writer, reporter, anchor, camera person, and editor. Instructor: Kim Sullivan. Limit of 10 students per course.

Speech

Available 2nd and 3rd trimesters. The course will allow students to explore their own style of speech delivery through oratory, extemporaneous speaking, and debating. The students will participate in a speech contest at the end of the trimester where they will be evaluated on the quality of their speeches. Goals:
  • define the parts of a speech
  • increase confidence in oral presentations
  • be able to giva a 3-5 minute speech with a 30 minute advance notice
  • successfully debate an issue and offer an effective rebuttal
  • develop each student's own personal style in delivering an oratory
